The Bayern Munich coach has confirmed the midfielder's injury he suffered against Nurnberg on Saturday is worse than first thought and it could be November before he returns
Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara could be out of action for up to three months, according to coach Pep Guardiola.
The 22-year-old summer signing from Barcelona suffered ankle ligament damage during Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Nurnberg, with an initial prognosis suggesting the midfielder could be sidelined for up to seven weeks.
However, Guardiola has confirmed the absence is likely to be much longer, and conceded losing his playmaker would be a "huge blow".
"He will be out of action for more than two months - possibly until halfway through November,” Guardiola told Bild.
“He played on for more than 20 minutes after picking up the injury, which shows that he has a lot of character.”
The Spain international was withdrawn just after the hour mark of Saturday’s Bavarian derby at the Allianz Arena, with scans showing damage to his ankle ligaments.
The loss of Thiago gives boss Guardiola further selection headaches, with a high proportion of his ample central midfield stock short of full fitness.
Javi Martinez and Mario Gotze’s appearances have been restricted so far this season, yet it appears Thiago’s lack of availability will prove most problematic to Guardiola.
He added: “This is a huge blow and we will really miss him. He has certain abilities that others don't possess. We will have to find other solutions.”
Bayern face a visit to Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Tuesday, before meeting Chelsea in Friday’s Uefa Super Cup final in Prague.

Allegri: Milan will attack PSV
With the scores at 1-1 following the first leg Champions League playoff in Eindhoven, the Rossoneri coach has promised his side will go out to win the game at home
Massimiliano Allegri has warned PSV that AC Milan will go at them all guns blazing in the second leg of their Champions League playoff on Wednesday.
The Dutch side must score at least once to have any chance of qualifying for the group stages following a 1-1 draw at the Philips Stadion a week ago, but despite holding the advantage of an away goal, Allegri says his men will be going all out for the win.
"We must have a positive attitude,” Allegri told the official club's website.
“We played a good match in the first leg, now we have to think about winning this match and not conceding a goal.
“We know how important the game is. We are facing a team that plays good football and that made life difficult for us.
“They create a lot of chances and we should not think about playing a defensive game."
Stephen El Shaarawy’s opening goal was cancelled out on the hour by Tim Matavz’s equaliser, and the Italian giants were lucky not to go home beaten after Phillip Cocu’s young side created a host of chances.
The Rossoneri were also well below par in their Serie A opener at the weekend – ceding a one goal lead to go down 2-1 at Hellas Verona.
Yet Allegri believes that defeat will only inspire his team to deliver the goods in Europe.
“Verona has to be just a blip. We must bounce back from that game and go back to the performance against PSV," he continued.
"For the first time in my three years in charge there was a bad approach to the game. Then there were also some mistakes in the reading of the game and those are things we can improve on.
“Errors are part of the game but what mustn't happen is the same approach as Saturday.
“We can do really well, we will have to suffer a bit and we must not think that we automatically deserve to win because of who we are.”
Allegri’s cause is not assisted by a lengthy list of absentees, but the 46-year-old is confident Brazilian striker Robinho could feature.
"Unfortunately Robinho picked up the injury just as he was hitting full fitness," he said.
“Robi is a quality player and he has done very well at Milan. This is an important year for him, he is out to prove himself.”

Xavi: Neymar can lead Barcelona trophy chase
The Barca captain believes the Brazilian’s arrival will assist the quest for silverware on all fronts, beginning with the Supercopa second leg against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday
Barcelona veteran Xavi says Neymar can inspire the club to a new generation of success.
The 33-year-old midfielder has begun his 15th season in the Blaugrana’s first team, during which time he has won an incredible 21 different titles.
But Xavi is not content to settle on that figure, and believes new recruit Neymar is the man to lead Barca to more glory.
“He’s a player who can really make a difference,” Xavi told the club's official website.
“He’s a quiet guy, he’s only young, but he shows a lot of intelligence. The boss is bringing him in slowly, and he’s showing his worth."
The €57 million signing from Santos has had to settle for a place on the substitutes' bench during the early stages of the campaign, but delivered a devastating cameo in the first leg of the Supercopa de Espana against Atletico Madrid.
Trailing 1-0 to a David Villa goal - and with Lionel Messi taken off injured - Neymar was summoned from the sidelines to grab a vital equaliser and square the game at 1-1 ahead of the return leg at the Camp Nou.
It was the 21-year-old superstar’s first competitive goal for Barcelona, and Xavi says that was only the beginning of many great things.
“At the Calderon he gave us an extra spark and he’s very good in one on one situations which is important for us," he continued.
“When teams close us down, we need wide men who can take men on and he’s a player who is able to really make a difference.
“He can get in the box, he can score and he is set to really make a difference at Barca.”
With Messi sidelined for the visit of Atletico, Neymar may well be given the nod to lead the line but Xavi believes that any success Barca do have will be down to the strength of the squad as a whole.
“At this club you are always expected to win and I think we have a team that can do that," he added.
“We’ve been through some tough times with Tito falling ill again and we have all had to adapt, but I think the team is fine now.
“We’ve started the season really well, with a spectacular debut at the Camp Nou and I think we can compete for the Copa del Rey, La Liga and the Champions League.”

Bale fails to turn up to Tottenham training
The 24-year-old did not report to training on Tuesday as he waits for his world record €100m transfer to Real Madrid, with Spurs infuriated by the Liga giant's perceived arrogance
Tottenham star Gareth Bale has failed to report to training as he waits for his €100 million transfer to Real Madrid.
The Welshman was due at the club's Enfield training base on Tuesday following a weekend break in Marbella.
Spurs insist they are yet to reach an agreement for Bale’s world record transfer to Real Madrid and claim to have received a separate offer, with ManchesTottenham have agreed to accept Madrid's €100m offer but are waiting to sign replacement players before formally sanctioning the 24-year-old’s departure, with Roma winger Erik Lamela due in London on Tuesday ahead of a club record €35m move to White Hart Lane.
Bale's departure has also been delayed by Spurs' failed bid for Willian last week, as the Brazilian opted to join Chelsea despite completing a medical at the north London club.
Neither Bale or Real Madrid anticipated that the saga would drag on for so long and the player expected the transfer to be confirmed by Tuesday.
The Spanish giants were so confident of landing the former Southampton man last week that they erected a stage at the Santiago Bernabeu ahead of his presentation to the supporters.
Los Blancos also started selling replica shirts bearing Bale’s name following a meeting last Wednesday between their president Florentino Perez and Spurs chairman Daniel Levy.
But Tottenham were infuriated by Madrid's perceived arrogance and have delayed the move, much to Bale’s annoyance with less than a week remaining of the transfer window.
Bale has agreed a six-year contract to move to Madrid to become Perez’s latest 'Galactico' signing after missing out to Barcelona in the race for Brazilian star Neymar at the start of the summer.
Spurs had discussed a player-exchange deal but will accept an €100m offer to be paid in three installments, eclipsing the €94m paid to Manchester United for Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009.ter United strongly linked with the attacker.

Juventus mull over move for Barcelona starlet Buenacasa
The 17-year-old striker, who has been likened to Paris Saint-Germain ace Zlatan Ibrahimovic, is believed to want to force a move away from Camp Nou
Juventus are considering making a move for Barcelona starlet Sergio Buenacasa.
The 17-year-old striker is regarded as one the most talented players La Masia has produced in recent seasons and has been repeatedly likened to former Blaugrana forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic - due to both his prodigious footballing talent and also his attitude on and off the field.
Consequently, Barca are willing to allow the attacker to leave Camp Nou, as evidenced by the player's recent trial with Scottish champions Celtic.
However, Goal has learned that Juventus are now monitoring Buenacasa's situation with interest, though, the Serie A titleholders have not made a formal approach for the teenager.
Indeed, it remains to be seen if the Bianconeri will lodge a bid given that director general Beppe Marotta is currently focused on addressing the club's excess of strikers, with Fabio Quagliarella and Alessandro Matri both free to leave the Turin-based side if an acceptable bid is received for either.
Meanwhile, several other clubs are tracking Buenacasa, meaning the youngster's future could well be decided before Juventus free up space in their squad for another forward.
Zaragoza-born Buenacasa has yet to make an official appearance for Barcelona's senior side.

Arsenal to table audacious Rooney bid
The Gunners have been given private encouragement that Manchester United would be willing to sell them the England talisman after ruling out off-loading the 27-year-old to Chelsea
Arsenal are preparing to table an audacious bid for Wayne Rooney later this week.
The Gunners have privately been given encouragement that Manchester United could be willing to sell them England’s talisman in the last week of the window despite their public insistence that he is not for sale at any price.
United are now determined not to sell Rooney to Chelsea, whose manager Jose Mourinho has given the striker until Wednesday at the latest to force through a move to Stamford Bridge.

United are now determined not to sell Rooney to Chelsea, whose manager Jose Mourinho has given the striker until Wednesday at the latest to force through a move to Stamford Bridge.
However, the Premier League champions are believed to be open to a £25 million-plus offer for the player from Arsenal, who they do not regard as a fellow title challenger.
Arsene Wenger is poised to make his move at the end of the week if, as expected, the Londoners secure qualification for the group stages of the Champions League by overcoming Fenerbahce at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday after winning 3-0 in the first leg in Istanbul six days ago.
Arsenal have turned their attention to Rooney after all but giving up hope of capturing Luis Suarez from Liverpool or Karim Benzema from Real Madrid.
It is expected that Wenger will sanction a bid of bid around the £25m mark for Rooney, who has been the subject of two formal offers from Chelsea this summer.
United manager David Moyes has insisted that the club do not want to sell Rooney and maintained that stance after the 27-year-old’s impressive display in the goal-less draw against Chelsea on Monday night in what was his first start of the season.
A third Chelsea bid for the England international would now be rejected out of hand, despite United's mooted interest in Blues playmaker Juan Mata, because the west Londoners are regarded as a direct rival for the league title.
However, United are believed to be more amenable to a move from Arsenal and a shock switch to north London in the final days of the window has not been ruled out by sources close to the situation.
Arsenal had registered an interest in Rooney as they prioritised the signing of a marquee striker and they have continued to monitor his situation this summer while making concerted attempts to capture Suarez and Gonzalo Higuain.
The Gunners also made an enquiry for Real Madrid’s Benzema last week but they accept they have run out of time to capture the France international this window given the complex chain of events required to take him to the Emirates.

A move for Rooney had been on the backburner but it is now firmly back on the agenda given the informal indications Arsenal have been given that the player is both available and would be interested in a surprising switch to north London.
Moyes has spoken warmly of Rooney’s attitude in training and his general work ethic but the player is still believed to be seeking a fresh challenge at an established Champions League club.
His name was chanted throughout Monday’s game by both United and Chelsea fans, while Mourinho said afterwards that he needs to go public if he still wants to move to Stamford Bridge or the Londoners will complete the signing of another striker, understood to be Samuel Eto'o.
"The person that started the story has to finish the story," Mourinho observed. "A club like us, a manager like me, the people that work in the club with me… we are not silly to try to get a player from a big club that doesn't sell what they don't want to sell.
"We are not silly to try something if somebody didn't start it. So I think it is time for the good of everyone to finish the story. For one side, for the other side."
Asked to clarify whether he would like Rooney to state publicly if he wanted to quit United, Mourinho replied: "Yes, I would like. We are going to close another player if he is not coming.
"It depends on this [Rooney's decision]. It depends on his reaction and his feelings. If now he doesn't want to leave, we are out of the thing. But we need to know. We need to know what is happening."
Mourinho said he would wait "24 hours, 48 hours". Pushed on why he had said Rooney had started the transfer saga, he made it clear that Chelsea had been encouraged to pursue the player. "I know because I know." The information, he said, had been passed to Chelsea because "he told somebody who is very important in his career".
Serie A Team of the Week: Toni & Rossi lead the line
The best players in Italy over the weekend are rewarded for their outstanding play, with four debutants making the grade
The first week of the Serie A season brings with it our first Team of the Week of 2013-14. And in week number one, it's Parma's Antonio Mirante who earns the number one shirt following his lights-out performance against Chievo.
Across the back four, there are a couple of debutants in the shape of Douglas Maicon, a winner with Roma at Livorno, and Hugo Campagnaro, whose first outing with Inter ended in a 2-0 home win over Genoa. Juan Zuniga rounds of the defence for his part in the 'new' Napoli's 3-0 victory against Bologna.
The midfield line sees another Roma player make his mark, with Daniele De Rossi getting the nod after breaking the deadlock in the win at the Armando Picchi. Marek Hamsik went one better for Napoli, scoring twice in the demolition of Bologna, while Alessio Cerci gets one of the wide spots for his excellent performance for Torino against Sassuolo. Fiorentina's hero on Monday night against Catania was Juan Cuadrado, earning him the final midfield space.
Up top, there are a couple of familiar names to go alongside new boy Carlos Tevez, who struck champions Juventus' only goal at Sampdoria. Luca Toni's double strike for Verona against AC Milan and Giuseppe Rossi's opener for Fiorentina ensure that there is plenty of Italian presence on the opening weekend.
