Contrary to claims made the by the England midfielder on Twitter, OM president Olivier Labrune has denied that an agreement has been reached for the QPR loanee to stay at Marseille next season.
Barton has made no secret of his desire to stay with Olympique de Marseille, the club that signed him on loan from Queens Park Rangers in the summer - despite his having a 12-match ban to serve - and on Tuesday the prolific tweeter claimed that his relationship with the club is set to extend into next season.
"It's not up to QPR if I stay. Agreement already in place for me to stay here," he wrote. "I'm loving life in France. Loving Marseille. They love me. All I want to do is gave everything for this football club. They backed me when nobody else did, for that I will be eternally grateful. This club is now in my blood, its impossible to get it out."
Labrune: 'There is no agreement'
However, Labrune has since adamantly denied reaching any agreement for the former Machester City and Newcastle midfielder to stay with the southern giants into next season.
"I wasn't aware of these tweets," said the OM president. "We wouldn't be against the idea of keeping Joey Barton at OM, but we're in absolutely no position to dictate terms. He belongs to QPR. We signed him on loan - with no option to buy - so we have no say in the matter. In any case, there is no agreement despite what Joey Barton has suggested."
