Baldini takes blame for Roma season

The Giallorossi director admits he made a mistake in appointing Zdenek Zeman as coach, while hailing former boss Luis Enrique.
Franco Baldini has taken the blame for Roma's disappointing campaign as the club prepares for Sunday's Coppa Italia final.

The Giallorossi parted company with former boss Luis Enrique last summer, with Zdenek Zeman named his successor, only for the 66-year-old to be sacked in February.

Since then Aurelio Andreazzoli has been put in caretaker charge as the club seeks a permanent appointment and Baldini admits he has made several telling mistakes.

“I made at least four or five (big) errors, but to reveal them I’d have to make certain judgments on people and things," the club's director told TG1.
“I can say that Zeman was not the right choice. We wanted to give the fans a spectacle, but were not ready to offer guaranteed results.”
However, the club could still end the season on a high by clinching a record 10th Coppa Italia title when it faces Rome rival Lazio on Sunday - a success that the club's director admits would make up for a poor season.

“The season has not given us the results we were hoping for considering the potential of the squad, but if the Coppa Italia arrives then it can still be considered positive,” Baldini continued. “I am not so much disappointed by the results as by certain decisions we didn’t get right, above all that we weren’t able to send the right message when we knew how much needed to be reconstructed."

The former England assistant also hailed the personal qualities of former Roma boss Enrique and revealed his regret that the manager's tenure did not work out as hoped.

"Luis Enrique is the best man I’ve ever men in football," he said. "I thank the lord I was able to meet him. Unfortunately, skepticism and a lack of experience made it difficult for him.”
