Torres happy with his time at Chelsea, looking for more consistency

The Spanish striker says that things at Chelsea have been good, but he's looking for more next season.

Fernando Torres seems pleased with the way things are going at Chelsea.

The Spanish striker had a rocky start to his career with the Blues, but titles from the Champions League and the FA Cup in 2012, and a Europa League crown in 2013, have the Spanish striker pleased with where things are at the club.

"We’re happy with the progress of the team," the Spanish striker told reporters on a conference call Tuesday. "We won the Champions League with one squad and this year with the new squad – with five, six, seven new players, young players – we had good success again in Europe.

"That’s not easy, especially with so many changes in the team."

While the general perception of Chelsea may be that of a team that has underachieved after failing to qualify for the knockout rounds of the Champions League and not challenging for the Premier League title, Torres says that the results have not been as bad as they've been made out to be.  

"At the end of the day it’s about results," he said. "We have won the FA Cup, the Champions League and we won the Europa League this season. Things are going well, so we have to be realistic with that. Chelsea has won three trophies in the last two years. It’s not bad."

Chelsea also qualified directly for the Champions League group stage with a win over Everton on the final day of the Premier League season, with Torres scoring the winning goal, his 23rd goal in all competitions and a vital one for a club that the striker says must be involved in the Champions League.

"It was one of the priorities of the club, of the players, of everyone at Chelsea to play Champions League football next season," he said after saying that his goal against Everton was especially satisfying because it locked up the automatic Champions League place. 

"We were really disappointed to be out in the group stage this season. We fixed that by winning the Europa League, but obviously Chelsea has to play Champions League."

The 23 goals were also important to the striker, who says the total is closer to what he expects of himself.

"I’m happy for that," the World Cup winner said of his final tally. "It’s closer to the statistics that I should have. I still think I can do better. Hopefully next season I can do better."

When pressed on what "better" would entail, Torres went on to say that he would like to not only increase his goal total, but to find more consistency in his game, something he thinks will be helped by the overall improvement in the team.

"I scored 23 goals," he said. "Next season I’m sure the team is going to be better in the Premier League, it’s going to be better in the Champions League. We have a chance to do things much better and that means the players will have the chance to do better.

"So hopefully I can do better talking about goals and especially about consistency."

Torres and Chelsea are currently on tour in the United States, with games against Manchester City slated for Thursday night in St. Louis and Saturday in New York.
