AC Milan - Celtic Betting Match Preview

Neil Lennon's men face a tough test in their Champions League opener at San Siro and our tipster expects the Hoops to draw a blank against Massimiliano Allegri's men
Celtic’s Champions League adventure begins on Wednesday night when the Scottish champions face a daunting trip to Italy to take on AC Milan at San Siro.

Neil Lennon’s men reached this stage of the competition by securing a dramatic 3-2 aggregate win over Shakhter Karagandy in the last round and will harbour hopes of emulating last year’s performance, when the Hoops reached the knockout stages of the tournament.

The enormity of the task facing Celtic on Wednesday, though, is reflected in their price with Betway offering a chunky 15/2 (8.50) quote on Neil Lennon’s men claiming a famous victory in Milan.

Massimiliano Allegri’s side booked their place in the group stages with an emphatic 4-1 aggregate victory over PSV Eindhoven in the last round and are chalked up at just 7/20 (1.35) with Betway to claim all three points against the Scottish champions. The draw is available at 15/4 (4.75) with the same firm.

Celtic were swept aside 5-0 on aggregate by Juventus when they last faced Italian opposition in this competition and Milan will also be expected to enjoy a comfortable victory over the Hoops on Wednesday.

Allegri’s charges showed great character at the weekend as they battled back from 2-0 down to force a 2-2 draw against Torino and, despite a number of injury concerns over key players including captain Riccardo Montolivo, Brazil midfielder Kaka and striker Stephen El Shaarawy, the hosts can be backed to put Celtic under pressure here.

The Hoops are notoriously poor travellers in the Champions League – a point underlined by a 2-0 defeat against Shakhter Karagandy en route to the group stages – and Lennon’s squad, now without Gary Hooper and Victor Wanyama, looks to be weaker than the side that battled admirably in this competition last season.

With that in mind, there appears to be value in backing Milan at 17/20 (1.85) in Betway's handicap market while the 9/10 (1.90) quote from the same firm for Celtic to fail to score at San Siro also offers considerable appeal here.

The 11/10 (2.10) quote from Betway, though, for Milan to win to nil is exquisite value and should be snapped up accordingly by punters ahead of this clash.

Those seeking to back bigger prices should take the 15/2 (8.50) in Betway’s correct score market for a resounding 3-0 win for the hosts on Wednesday.
