Arsene Wenger: More to come from Ozil at Arsenal

The Frenchman lauds his new signing after the Gunners' convincing 3-1 victory over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Saturday, the German star having "enjoyed" his debut
Arsene Wenger knows that there is more to come from record signing Mesut Ozil after the Germany international's impressive debut at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

It took just 11 minutes for the 24-year-old to capture the fans' attention, providing the assist for Olivier Giroud's opener against Sunderland.

Ozil created further chances for his team-mates, particularly Theo Walcott, as the Gunners ran out 3-1 winners and Wenger believes that what was shown was just a glimpse of the former Real Madrid star's talent.

"He looked very comfortable," the Frenchman told the club's official website. "He is a great player and there is a lot more to come from him. He told me after the game he enjoyed it but he had a good idea of what to expect.

"We have a game that's based a lot on movement and he gives everyone time to be available on the ball. It's a kind of technical security and a creative side to his game that is very interesting. His final pass and his retention of the ball gives everybody time to move."

Ozil missed training on Friday through illness but started on Saturday and Wenger was impressed with his response.

"He was like a guy who was invited to play for us because he was sick," the manager continued, "but, for a guy who was invited, he did well.

"There was a demand from everybody to have a player for reasons that we didn't challenge for the title because we lost big players without being capable of bringing the same stature of players in so [his signing] was a huge lift for everybody who loves our club.
